The River Lot begins its 500km journey across the south of France in sparsely populated LOZERE in Languedoc Roussillon, flowing through CANTAL in romantic Auvergne to continue west through AVEYRON and LOT (in Midi Pyrenees in South West France) to finish in LOT-ET-GARONNE in historic Aquitaine.

To explore the basin of the River Lot is to travel from the edge of the Massif Central to the plain of Aquitaine. Between the snow-clad woods of the wild Gévaudan, with its ever-present memory of the “Beast”, and the harmony of the hills by the Garonne, which is reminded Stendhal of Tuscany, the contrast is extreme.

There are nearly two hundred villages perched on rocky spurs, clinging to cliff-faces or nestling by the river. Slate roofs here, tile roofs there. Il the upper valley the schist is dark blue, in the Quercy causes the limestone is honey-coloured, and near Marcillac the sandstone is purple.
From Le Bleymard to Aiguillon, this long valley is a ribbon of life.
